AK (ASTIGMATIC KERATOTOMY)
This procedure, to correct astigmatism, is aimed at making the
shape of the cornea (front of the eye) more spherical. Astigmatism can
cause blurring in both distance and near viewing. In cases when
Astigmatism is the main problem, AK may provide complete correction.
The procedure involves
micro-incisions being made in the cornea with a special diamond
keratome. Two surgery visits usually one week apart, will be required
for treatment of both eyes. AK is recognised as being at least as
effective as LASIK. For
some eyes results are more impressive and recovery times quicker than
for LASIK. As with LASIK the surgery is performed under topical
anaesthetic and you will experience no discomfort although some
grittiness for a few
hours is normal.
