PRK (PHOTOREFRACTIVE KERATECTOMY)

PRK was the original laser-refractive procedure before the
development of the microkeratome and LASIK. PRK is used when the cornea is deemed by
the doctor to be too thin for a LASIK procedure. The method involves
applying the laser beam directly onto the surface of the cornea after
the epithelium (skin) is removed. PRK takes about the same time to
complete as LASIK, however the discomfort levels are much higher and
strong medication is recommended for 48 hours.
