Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)

LASIK Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis

The first step of LASIK surgery involves the use of a highly sophisticated laser, called IntraLase, in order to create a flap of tissue on the front of the cornea. In some cases, a different technique is used to create the flap, involving the placement of a microkeratome instrument onto the cornea. The second step is to use the excimer laser to reshape the underlying cornea according to your refractive error (optical prescription). The corneal flap is then returned to its natural position and, because the cornea heals quickly, stitches are not required. With LASIK surgery it is possible to have both eyes treated on the same day. Post-operative discomfort is minimal, and functional vision occurs within a day for the majority of patients. Within a day or two, patients are able to resume most normal activities, and they need to use eye drops for only a short period of time. Virtually all patients visiting Vision Laser are treated using the LASIK technique.
